IPL Photofacial Treatments

A photofacial is a generic term for a skin treatment that uses some form of light-based technology. The two main types of photofacials rely on LED (light-emitting diode) and IPL (intense pulsed light) to treat skin woes. Generally, when people refer to photofacials, theyre talking about IPL photofacials, which are also called intense pulsed light therapy, photo rejuvenation, BBL therapy, or broadband light therapy.

IPL photofacial is a noninvasive, non ablative treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of visible light to improve such skin conditions as fine lines and wrinkles, freckles, age spots, rosacea, port-wine stains, and facial veins. It may also help treat mild to moderate acne and stretch marks, and it spurs collagen production.

Available Photofacial Treatments

The most popular photofacial treatment at Skinsense is a treatment to reverse sun damage, even out facial color and improve skin tone and texture in the process.

Other popular photofacial treatments at Skinsense are to:-

  • Tighten pores
  • Reduce the severity of acne
  • Reduce the appearance of or eliminate sun spots and freckles
  • Lessen hyper pigmentation
  • Treat skin flushing and skin redness
  • Reduce the appearance of scars (acne, chickenpox, etc.)
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reverse sun damage
  • Treat vascular lesions (broken capillaries, blood vessels, telangiectasia, rosacea)
  • Improve facial contour
  • Tighten skin
  • Boost collagen and elastin production
In addition to the above popular IPL Photofacial treatments Skinsense is able offer you a treatment program for your own unique need.

The Photofacial Treatment Process

The clinician applies ultrasound gel to the treatment area and chooses a setting on the device based on the clients skin type and color. The clinician then places the treatment head to the skin and delivers precise pulses of light to the skin.

The treatment generally lasts about 20 minutes. Though the light is safe, it is recommended that clients and clinicians wear goggles or some form of eye protection during the procedure.

What Happens During Photofacial Treatment

IPL systems target cells with color in the skin, delivering light energy that converts to heat energy. For example, the device might target the melanin in the skin surface to remove the discoloration that causes age spots. Most systems use filters to refine the light-energy output for certain areas. The treatment targets the lower layers of skin without affecting the top layers.

Is There Any Downtime

There is minimal downtime. Clients can have the procedure done on their lunch break and return to work afterward. Some may experience redness for a few hours. Overall, IPL photofacial side effects can include redness, peeling, swelling, blistering, scarring, and skin discolorations.

How Many Photofacial Treatments Do I Need

Clients should see an improvement after one IPL photofacial treatment, but 4 to 6 sessions may be necessary.

Good Candidates for IPL Photofacial Treatment

People with light, untanned skin that is still somewhat elastic are the best candidates for an IPL photofacial. It is also important for patients to have a realistic understanding about what the procedure can do. When performed on the right person, it effectively improves skin texture, eliminating discolorations, reducing pore size, and minimizing wrinkles and fine lines.

If you have rosacea, a condition that causes blotchy redness in the face, you may also benefit from an IPL photofacial.

For more serious issues such as heavy facial lines and severe acne scars patients may wish to consider more aggressive treatment, such as Microneedling.

Not Good Candidates for IPL Treatment

People with tanned or naturally dark skin sometimes experience changes in skin pigmentation after IPL photofacial treatment.

African-Americans and people of Greek and Italian descent, for example, may wish to discuss possible side effects with your clinician before opting for this procedure.

Additionally, people who are taking the medication Accutane should not have an IPL photofacial until at least six months after they stop using the drug. Pregnant women should also postpone treatment until after they give birth.
